Nicholas James C Tana Lawn® Cotton

Nicholas James is a large scale lace pattern drawn from the elaborate ruffs worn in the sixteenth century and featured often within Elizabethan miniatures. The design was originally drawn in miniature and then enlarged to bring a bold, modern two-tone design to this Liberty print.
Nicholas James is from the collection The Sixteenth Century: the height of the Renaissance – The Renaissance emerged in Florence in the late Middle Ages, with clothing counting for a significant proportion of household expenditure. The affluent demanded luxurious textiles, multi-coloured silks, figured velvets and brocade. Almost every element of a garment was decorated with embroidered pattern, thanks to the Tudor and Elizabethan affinity with the natural world.
The fabrics in this collection are inspired by Tudor miniatures, the paintings of Hans Holbein and the repetitive, stylised Blackwork created by well-born women of the time.
